Most people who abuse alcohol know the reasons why they need to stop drinking, but the how continues to puzzle even this most diligent person among us. Its possible that you have lost many jobs and have legal problems. Maybe your partner has dumped you or your family is tired of your behavior. All reasons why you need to look at your drinking and seriously think about stopping.

If you even suspect you have a problem with alcohol, you possibly do. Most ‘normal’ individuals don’t just wake up and say, “I think I should give up drinking.” Most drinkers know in the back of their mind that they have a problem.

If there is a Magic Pill to stop drinking, an alcoholic will surely purchase one. Intake of alcohol can also be lessened or eliminated through hypnosis. Wouldn’t a time machine be nice, go back in time before you had a problem and refrain from that very first drink?

The fact of the matter is there is no fast and simple way. To quit drinking liquor, you have to go through a process to learn how to live without alcohol. For some, it’s going to be painful; alcohol cravings can be long. Therefore being prepared with coping tools and methods is essential for long term success. If you are an alcoholic who has been drinking heavily for a long period of time, you need to seek your doctor’s advice before quitting in order to help you through withdrawal and detox. The pain and discomfort others experience is minimal. A lot of alcoholics have tried to stop once or twice in their lives. But the physical cravings can last for years. In order to succeed, you have to get used to living a life with no alcohol. Approx. 1/1000 people struggling with liquor stay sober beyond 2 years. You will not succeed if you don’t follow the methodical process to quit drinking alcohol.

First, you have to admit to yourself that you should stop drinking.

Write down all the reasons that you think you should stop drinking alcohol. No excuses, just write down each and every reason. Be sure and include anyone you hurt, how humiliated you are, and any damage you have done. Put this paper in a safe place so that you could read it when you need to expel any uncertainty that your need to quit drinking alcohol.

While you are at it, try to figure out how much liquor costs you: to buy, to go to clubs, in legal fees, and in lost earnings. Check your credit card statements and your budget; do not just make up numbers. Try to figure out how much alcohol is costing you not just physically, mentally, relationally but financially.

This kind of honest introspection is something you would have to get used to in order to come to terms with your life and recover fully. You will know when its the correct time to quit.

Get to a Medical Doctor

The damage done to your body is something only a physician can evaluate. Your physician could also evaluate how you should quit drinking. Its either doing it by yourself or going to a hospital with medical supervision.

Telling People You Trust Could be Helpful

If you need understanding and support throughout the process, tell people you trust that you will stop drinking alcohol. If they really care about you then they would help you.

Find Meetings

12 Step Meetings is a great place to meet others who have gone through the same thing you’re going through. Searching for 12 Step meetings in your neighborhood will get you started. Different meetings draw different individuals. Attend a lot of meetings all around your neighborhood; in fact, you should attend 90 meetings within 90 days. These meetings will give you all the info you need about how to quit drinking alcohol.

If you have reached this point then that is something to be really proud of. Now its time to start a new life. One that does not include drinking alcohol.
